Your day starts early at Notting Hill Gate tube station, where you’ll meet your guide and small group of up to 20 fellow travelers. From there, you’ll all hop into a private minibus and head out of the city toward the Wiltshire countryside, which is packed with enigmatic remnants of Stone Age cultures that once populated much of the UK. As you pass ancient burial mounds, earthworks, and standing stones your guide will fill you in on what we know (and what we are still trying to figure out) about their mysterious prehistoric creators, who kept no written history and only left strange monuments that archaeologists are still scouring for clues.
Your first stop of the day is a little surprise: at the end of an anonymous dirt turn-off sits West Kennet Long Barrow, a Neolithic tomb built nearly 6,000 years ago. The best part is that you can walk right inside and have a look around. As you marvel at the building practices of humanity’s distant forebears, you’ll learn what we know about their belief system and burial practices, as well as how such an amazing site came to be sitting in the middle of a farmer’s field.
Outside the tomb, you’ll look across the countryside to the enormous Silbury Hill that isn’t actually a hill at all, but a chalk mound built by prehistoric Britons for reasons that remain unclear. Comparable in size to some of the smaller Egyptian pyramids, it’s origins and purpose are a matter of hot debate among archeologists. Your guide will fill you in on the various theories and let you make up your own mind.
Hopping back in the car, you’ll drive through the Town of Avebury, where you’ll see, from the minibus, one of the most stunning Neolithic henge monuments (henge is a general word for a type of Neolithic monument) in the world. Like Stonehenge, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Unlike Stonehenge, It’s sitting next to the side of the road and you can view it without any major crowds.
Your next stop is little more modern, as these things go. The city of Bath doesn’t just have a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one. People have been living around its famous hot springs since the Bronze Age, but it was the Romans who first developed it as a resort town, where people came to bathe in the supposedly curative waters. Later, it became one of the biggest and liveliest cities in England, a favorite place for the landed gentry (and the upstart business class) to come during “The season” to drink, gamble, and see and be seen at lavish balls. You’ll learn its colorful history as you take a pleasant city stroll through streets lined with some of the finest Georgian Architecture in the UK.
You’ll break for lunch in front of the Bath Abbey. Your guide will give you plenty of recommendations for where to eat well on any budget, as well as a few tips for what to see inside the Abbey. Be sure to save a little time to look around inside, it’s spectacular.
After lunch you’ll head inside the Roman Baths that give this small city its name. You’ll learn all about this ancient health club and it’s history.
Your final stop is the world-famous Stonehenge, another Neolithic monument that is among the most spectacular and least understood ancient archeological sites in the world. Were these stones erected some 5,000 years ago as a monument? A Calendar? A Roman Temple? Or even, as some more, ahem, creative sources have alleged, a landing site for alien spaceships? While most guides stay in the parking lot, yours will accompany you on the short shuttle bus to the site and tell you its story as you stroll around its perimeter. The known and unknown mix and mingle wonderfully at this primeval attraction, inviting you to draw some of your own conclusions, or perhaps just marvel at the mysteries of human history.
With a small group and an expert local guide, this day trip offers you a unique and immersive experience in one the world’s great cradles of human culture. Whether you have a deep interest in ancient history or are traveling with hard-to-impress young people, this experience will be a highlight of your visit.
