The inside story
The Catacombs of Naples, ancient underground areas dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, are still considered to be a symbol of Neapolitan Christian religiosity. These were originally used as a burial place and became a pilgrimage destination until the ninth century AD. Abandoned and forgotten over the centuries, the catacombs are today a popular destination for tourists.
The Catacombs of San Gennaro are considered to be the largest in southern Italy and are located below one of the most characteristic districts of Naples: Rione Sanità. Other underground Catacombs are those of San Gaudioso and San Severo.
